What:

New Frequencies @ YBCA features both emerging and world class musicians that expand the global landscape. YBCA showcases artists within our first floor galleries, as well as in the Forum, in exciting pairings and collaborations. In the galleries, musicians have the opportunity to respond directly to the work of the eight visual artists commissioned for Wallworks. This portion of the program was co-curated with Julio César Morales, YBCA’s Visual Arts Adjunct Curator, In the Forum, international as well as local Bay Area pioneers from the experimental world music and avant-garde music scenes present an array of sound styles from around and out of this world.

Pinkoya/T.I.T.S.

Pinkoya -- cellist/vocalist Theresa Wong, percussionist/vocalist Dohee Lee and koto-player Kanoko Nishi -- ignites in explosive and lyrical improvisations which expand the vocabulary of their traditional acoustic instruments into unexpected landscapes and otherworldly conversations. Pinkoya responds to artists Makoto Aida and Yehudit Saportas. Veteran virgin-rockers T.I.T.S.(named after the only thing they have in common) have been described as “doom-laden garage rock stompers” with “witchy” vocals and “simmering and pulsating sonics.” T.I.T.S. responds to artists Makoto Aida and Leslie Shows.

Lisa Mezzacappa & Nightshade/Shimomitsu

Bassist/composer Lisa Mezzacappa and her ensemble Nightshade (Cory Wright, John Finkbeiner, Kjell Nordeson and Tim Perkis) perform a new series of wordless chamber songs inspired by the work of artists Yehudit Sasportas and Edgar Arceneaux. Shimomitsu is an experimental music collaboration between Shemoel Recalde and Joshua Roberts, whose sound lies in a blissfully uncomfortable place between tribal doo-wop and a psychedelic surf experience, that they like to call ocean rock. Shimomitsu responds to artists Leslie Shows and Amanda Ross-Ho.

Jackeline Rago & Steve Hogan Duo/ Kev Choice & Jennifer Johns Duo

Virtuoso instrumentalist Jackeline Rago, known for her Afro Venezuelan rhythms, and renowned beat boxer Steve Hogan combine forces to create a lively, contemporary vocal-percussive extravaganza. Sultry-voiced singer Jennifer Johns teams up with jazz pianist Kev Choice for swinging set that is both heart-rending and head-bobbing. Jackeline Rago & Steve Hogan Duo and Kev Choice & Jennifer Johns Duo respond to artist Odili Donald Odita.

Chris Brown/Mason Bates & David Arend Duo

A solo performance by composer, pianist and electronic musician Chris Brown, known for his eclectic and highly imaginative compositions for acoustic and electronic instruments, and computer networks. Chris Brown responds to artist Chris Finley. DJ and electronica artist Mason Bates (aka DJ Masonic) and upright bassist David Arend are well-known in the SF club scene for their futuristic musical blend of jazz, classical, rock and electronic music. Mason Bates & David Arend Duo responds to artists Chris Finley & Tillman Kaiser.
