Neon is one of the family of noble gases. When ionized by application of a high voltage, the gas glows. By bending glass tubing into the shapes of letters, forms and objects, then filling the tube with neon, sealing and connecting to a high voltage source, a sign or other image is created. Coatings of various phosphors within the tube can be used to obtain colors other than the characteristic red-orange neon glow. Other gases, such as krypton, helium, xenon and argon/mercury are also used and produce different colors.
