As the competition to develop and market affordable and professionally built solid body electric guitars was heating up in the mid-1950s, Gibson branched out into new directions that would eventually yield a wide variety of new and innovative Gibson products. Among those new products was the Les Paul Junior single cutaway model, which quickly became Gibson’s best-selling model and the instrument of choice for such legends as Leslie West, Steve Marriott, Keith Richards, Mick Ralphs, Mick Jones and Paul Westerberg.

Jonathan Demme gives us some Neil Young musical and spiritual soul. Young on a stage full of personal icons: alone in the center of a circle of his beloved acoustic guitars; in the midst of stellar musicians Ben Keith, Ralph Molina, Rick Rosas, Pegi Young and Anthony “Sweet Pea” Crawford, plus an onstage painter portrayed by Eric Johnson. There are delicately offered acoustic numbers like “Sad Movies” and “Mexico”; mesmerizing electric travelogues into the artist’s psyche (“No Hidden Path”); searing, chaotic anthems including “Like a Hurricane” and “Cinnamon Girl”; and rarely performed pieces like “Kansas” and “Ambulance Blues” that provide glimpses of Young’s less public persona. In addition to his distinctively blistering and plaintive guitar, Neil draws deep melancholy from an old piano and pats it on the side after like a beloved old dog. He sings his heart out again and again. It is a collection for the ages..

An incredibly energetic, optimistic and versatile director of character-driven films, Jonathan Demme is considered one of Hollywood’s most critically acclaimed and admired filmmakers. He has made numerous trophy-taking films, including the Oscar winning, THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (1991) – one of the few films ever to win all the major categories (best film, best director, best screenplay, best actor and best actress. MELVIN AND HOWARD (1980) and PHILADELPHIA (1993) took two Oscars each. He has directed lively, original human comedies like SOMETHING WILD (1986) and MARRIED TO THE MOB (1988). As a reflection of his life long passion for rock n roll in particular and music in general, he also helmed a number of concert films and documentaries about legendary rockers, such as STOP MAKING SENSE (1984), STOREFRONT HITCHCOCK (1998) and NEIL YOUNG: HEART OF GOLD (2006). Demme has been making documentaries since 1987, about Haiti, New Orleans (shooting 3 or 4 times a year on an extensive project since 2005) and inspirational people, Reverend Robert Castle (COUSIN BOBBY), Jean Dominique (THE ANGROMOMIST), Nelson Mandela (MANDELA, SON OF AFRICA), (BEAH: A BLACK WOMAN SPEAKS) and Jimmy Carter (JIMMY CARTER MAN FROM PLAINS). His most recent narrative, RACHEL GETTING MARRIED (2008), premiered at the Venice Film Festival and is rich with music throughout. Jonathan is presently working on a screenplay adaptation of Michel Faber's 2004 novella, The Courage Consort, which Demme has said might even become a musical. Regarding his passion for both music and filmmaking, Demme noted at the 2009 Toronto Film Festival where NEIL YOUNG TRUNK SHOW Premiered, “For me, Movies + Music = Happiness!” Next Month, he will direct Beth Henley's play Family Week for the MCC theater company in Manhattan. Demme has said, “I hope to create a Neil Young trilogy, without having any idea at present what form the third installment will take”.
