Native American Coiled Basketry October 2, 2010

2 day class: 10/2-9 am-4:30 pm, 10/3-9 am-3 pm. For thousands of years Native Americans in what is now Orange County have been weaving baskets with local native plants. Participants in this class will have the opportunity to create a juncus (Juncus textiles) coiled medallion basket start with a deer grass (Muhlenbergia rigens) foundation, woven in the traditional style unique to Southern California. Abe Sanchez is a promoter in the revitalization of indigenous arts. Abe's artistic experience as a master basket weaver of Southern California Native American basketry has given him the opportunity to assist interested tribes and individuals in the revival of this ancient craft throughout California, Arizona and Mexico. Dress for the outdoors. For both days, bring a sack lunch, small box cutter or pocket knife, awl, small scissors, and a medium small size container to hold water to soak your basketry materials. Awls and box cutters will be available for purchase at the class.
