Founded by in 1977, the Chopin Foundation was inspired by the First National Chopin Piano Competition held in Miami in 1975 under the auspices of the American Institute of Polish Culture. The National Chopin Piano Competition, the only major music competition open exclusively to American pianists, is held in Miami every five years, and its winners are sent to the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, Poland, held always the same year. Previous winners include Mei-Ting Sun, Gabriela Montero and Jeffrey Kahane. Claire Huangci won First Place at the competition that was held February 20-28 in Miami.
