Author of International Bestseller No Logo Presents Latest Book The Shock Doctrine
(CALGARY, August 24, 2007) Acclaimed journalist Naomi Klein, author of the international bestseller No Logo, will make a special pre-Festival appearance at WordFest: Banff-Calgary International Writers Festival on October 1. Klein will present her latest book The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism, called a “movement bible” by The New York Times. The event takes place at 7:30 p.m. at the Knox United Church.

Born in Canada in 1970, Naomi Klein is a contributor to the essay collections Fences and Windows, No War and Sin Patron, and her writings have appeared in The Baffler, Ms. and Village Voice, among many other publications. For the last four years she has been covering the rise of anti-corporate activism in her syndicated column in the Toronto Star.

The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism chronicles how the global “free market” came to dominate the world and is premised on attacking disaster-stricken populations with economic “shock therapy” in order to reinforce corporate dominance.

Klein calls “disaster capitalism” the program of social and economic engineering that is driving the world. “Shock doctrine” is an influential, but little understood theory, referring to the notion that there needs to be some kind of collective crisis or disaster—either real or manufactured—in order to push through profoundly unpopular policies that enrich the few and impoverish the many.

The event will take place on Monday, October 1 at the Knox United Church, 506 - 4 Street SW, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 and available now from Pages Books on Kensington (283-6655), the WordFest office (294-7462) and Ticketmaster (403.777.0000).

The 12th annual WordFest: Banff-Calgary International Writers Festival takes place October 09-14, 2007. The complete festival line-up will be announced September 5 at 11 a.m. at the official Festival launch, which will take place the Art Gallery of Calgary 117 - 8 Avenue SW.
