Nad Ninad: From Our Archives - Guided Listening Session on Ahmed Jan Thirakwa. In collaboration with the Indian Musicological Society. This is a programme that makes available to lovers of Hindustani classical music some of NCPA's archival recordings. This month, it's the music of the late tabla maestro Ahmed Jan Thirakwa. The indisputable tabla virtuoso, Ahmed Jan Thirakwa (1878-1976) was a versatile percussionist who had a tremendous impact on the art and practice of modern tabla playing. Having made his debut in Mumbai at the age of 16, Khansaheb proceeded to become one of the busiest soloists and most sought-after accompanists. Although primarily associated with the Farukhabad tradition, his performance revealed a vibrant mix of the Delhi, Ajrada and Lucknow styles of tabla. The maestro had perfected the art of reciting of tabla compositions (padhant) and enthralled the audience with this talent. His superb musicality and pioneering efforts in popularizing the solo tabla made him one of the most popular and highly regarded percussionists of the twentieth century. This session will be conducted by the tabla maestro Suresh Talwalkar with Nayan Ghosh and Arvind Mulgaonkar.
