Mythology, Art and the Night Sky
Saturday, January 16th , 2010 from 1:00 p.m.-2:30 p.m., Hayward Main Library, 835 C St. @ Mission Blvd. (2 blocks from Hayward BART)
Have you ever gazed at the night sky and wondered where star names came from & why certain constellations became figures from mythology? How did artists create the beautiful and elaborate star maps showing these figures striding across the night sky? Rob Drew, a Bay Area astronomer and mythologist, who teaches star-gazing classes locally and volunteers at Chabot Space and Science Center, discusses the origins and history of constellation & star names using illustrations by some of the artists who have produced and decorated star maps. He will also show examples of modern drawings from an upcoming book, illustrated by Elaine Drew. Contact 510-881-7980 for information.
