KARAVIKA is a New York City based quartet comprising violin, cello, double bass and tabla, with members coming from distinctly different musical backgrounds from South Asia to North America.
Their performance at Alwan for the Arts will feature material from their debut album, Sunrise, as well as new explorations in “Rabindra Sangeet”, the song & poetry of the great Noble Laureate, Rabindranath Tagore.

Bio
Trina Basu:
Trina Basu is a violinist, teacher and music therapist based in Brooklyn, NY. Born in Miami, Fl and trained in western classical music, Trina began to pursue improvisational styles of music in college,she was awarded an Artist Fellowship from the Indo-Shastri Canadian Institute to study Carnatic Classical music with esteemed violinists, Vittal Ramamurthy & Padma Shankar in Chennai, India.

Arun Ramamurthy:
Arun is an exciting violinist who is making his mark in Indian Classical and World music. Disciple of Dr. Mysore Manjunath & Sri Mysore Nagaraj, he has become one of the most sought after violinists in the US. Arun has been accompanying major artists touring from India, as well as performing solo concerts, for the past 17 years. He has carved a niche for himself in the NYC music scene as a versatile musician, playing together with artists from Carnatic, Hindustani and jazz styles.

Amali Premawardhana:
Amali is one of New York City’s emerging young cellists bridging the gap between the music of her western classical training and the music of her South Asian root. Her performing career has included festivals such as the Classical Revolution Music Festival in San Francisco, as well as Western European tours with the highly acclaimed Orchestra: ‘Daughters of Nina Simone’ .

Perry Wortman:
Perry began playing double bass at the age of 13. Throughout middle and high school, he received numerous awards for excellence in jazz and classical music, Aside from his work as a jazz musician, he plays bass guitar in Brooklyn based rock band, Hungry Hands, he continues to search for new musical realms of expression within the context of improvisation.

Adavit Shah:
Advait has been playing tabla since the age of eight. Largely a self taught musician, he has developed much of his musical knowledge and skill through listening to recordings and attending concert. Through his training and self study, Advait has developed a unique style which creatively blends a mix of East and West.
