Iconic rock groups like the Beatles, the Doors, Grateful Dead and Led Zeppelin may have disbanded years ago, but their sound is alive and well at the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association's (GLAZA) "Music in the L.A. Zoo - CLASSIC ROCK NIGHT,” which offers a rare opportunity to visit the zoo after hours under the stars on Thursday, July 28, 2011. Performances by an array of cover bands take place from 6 to 9 pm throughout the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens while guests may view many of the Zoo's animals (until 8 pm) and enjoy an eclectic array of food and beverages. Picnics are also permitted.

Classic Rock Night features Cubensis (Grateful Dead tribute band), The Heist (music from The Doors, Led Zeppelin, the Who and Creedence Clearwater Revival), The Lonely Hearts Club Band (Beatles tribute band), Heartache Tonight (Eagles tribute band), the Neil Morrow Band (Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, and the rockin’ side of Elton John), David Vito Gregoli & the Moulin Bros. (music from James Taylor, Crosby, Stills and Nash and Loggins and Messina), Wayward Sons ("arena rock" songs by Journey, Queen, Styx and Foreigner), and L.A.vation (U2 tribute band).

Food and beverage selections available at locations throughout the Zoo include a beer and wine bar; soft drinks; grilled barbeque hamburgers, grilled chicken, and Italian sausage served with beans, potato salad and chips; pulled pork and chicken sliders with coleslaw; specialty hot and cold sandwiches, salads; chicken tender baskets; shrimp cocktail; vegetable cups; fruit cups; hot dogs; kids meals, and snacks like popcorn, cotton candy, ice cream, pretzels, and churros with a variety of sweet fillings.

MUSIC IN THE L.A. ZOO is one of many programs presented by the private, non-profit Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association (GLAZA), founded in 1963. For nearly five decades, GLAZA has funded exhibits, plant and animal species conservation, capital projects, and education and community outreach programs at the Los Angeles Zoo, an international leader in the preservation of endangered species and a conservation center for the care and study of wildlife. GLAZA also builds and invests endowment funds and operates five essential departments on behalf of the Zoo, including development, publications, membership, volunteers and oversight of the Zoo's food/retail concessions. There are currently 72,000 GLAZA member households representing more than 300,000 adults and children, the largest membership base of a cultural organization in Los Angeles, and a volunteer corps of over 700.

Admission to "Music in the L.A. Zoo" for GLAZA members is $13 for adults and $8 for children ages 6 to 15. Admission for non-members is $17 for adults and $11 for children ages 6 to 15. Children 5 and under are free.

The Los Angeles Zoo is located at 5333 Zoo Drive in Griffith Park at the junction of the Ventura (134) and Golden State (5) freeways. Tickets for "Music in the L.A. Zoo" may be purchased at the Zoo or in advance by phone at (323) 644-6042 or online at http://www.lazoo.org.
