PHILADELPHIA – The Penn Bookstore will welcome journalist and novelist Murali Balaji at 5 p.m., Thursday, March 20, to discuss his new book, “The Professor and the Pupil: The Politics and Friendship of W.E.B. Du Bois and Paul Robeson.” The discussion and signing will be held on the second floor in the bookstore's multi-media event space.
In this work, Balaji chronicles the 40-year friendship between these two renowned civil rights activists. He documents how both evolved into leaders of the American liberal movement after World War II, while offering insight into why they became ostracized for their political views even by fellow African-Americans.
In examining the lives of both men, Balaji also details the changing social and political conditions around the world that led Du Bois and Robeson, who spent the last years of his life in West Philadelphia, to their political epiphanies and eventually their ends.

This event is FREE and open to the public!
