Katharine Houghton, actress, writer, and lecturer

Saucy gamine, reluctant penitent, glorious conqueror, all in one, Katharine Hepburn refused to play by Hollywood’s rules. After a series of failed films, including Sylvia Scarlett, she was labeled box office poison. By the time she made Stage Door in 1937 she was considered finished. But she staged a triumphant comeback three years later in The Philadelphia Story. The film’s plot paralleled her tumultuous relationship with the Hollywood system: stubborn Katharine agrees to soften her arrogance and play nice, thereby winning the right man and a long and brilliant career. In this talk, the star’s niece shares memories of her aunt.
