Description
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a brief, empirically supported method to help people engage in and maintain healthy behavior change. Developed by William R. Miller, Ph.D., and Stephen Rollnick, Ph.D. in the 1980's for addiction related behaviors, MI is now being applied in a wide variety of settings (medical, mental health, education, criminal justice), with culturally diverse populations both nationally and internationally. In this introductory workshop, participants will learn about the theoretical and empirical support for MI, begin to develop MI skills through participation in group activities and role plays and discuss applications for incorporating this approach into their own clinical settings.

Learning Objectives

Review the theoretical background and empirical support of Motivational Interviewing.
Learn about the "spirit" and basic clinical skills of Motivational Interviewing.
Participate in clinical skill building activities and group discussion.

This workshop is presented by Mariann Suarez, Ph.D., ABPP, FAACBP who is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine and Head of Child Psychology at the Silver Child Development Center, Department of Psychiatry, at the University of South Florida Health Sciences Center.
