Exclusive showing of Laura Pacheco and John de Graaf’s The Motherhood Manifesto, a documentary about working mothers in America and how public policy has let them down. The film will play at 1:30PM Saturday afternoon, followed by Q&A with the filmmakers. Admission is $7. Admission proceeds will support momsrising.org and the 2008 Portland Women’s Film Festival.

Preceding the film the Hollywood Theatre and Milagros will host a Mother’s Day Market starting at 10:00AM. Local women-owned businesses that offer creative goods and services with particular appeal to mothers (or anyone with a dear little one in their life) will turn the lobby of the theater into a fun-filled bazaar. Admission to the Market is free but movie ticket holders will also be entered into a raffle and may win wonderful gifts donated by the vendors and local sponsors.

As part of the festivities Super XX Man and his band will be bring their gentle musical musings to the lobby of the theater for a free live performance beginning at 11 am. By day, Super XX Man (a.k.a. Scott Garred) is a musical therapist working in the maximum-security wing of the Oregon State Hospital, by night creates bittersweet folksongs of love and memory with the help of his band: Michelle Garred on accordion, Dave Depper on guitar, Josh Wood on bass, John Vecchiarelli on cocktail kit, and Ali Wesley on background vocals and flute. Sure to soften even the most hardened cynic, this is a show not to be missed.

Local sponsors include Milagros, Zoom Baby Gear, Purple Moon Child Development, Metro Parent Magazine, Lilaguide.com, Eclectikid, Blueprints for Footprints, Mother Tree Doula Services, Natural Light Photography, Goosberry, Global Sistergoods, Zenana Spa and Wellness Center, Baby Wit, and Mother Source.

So bring the family, get informed, and do a little Mother’s Day shopping to boot!
