Mostly Literary Fiction Book Discussion Group: “The Writing on My Forehead”, by Nafisa Haji
Monday, February 8th , 2010 - Two meetings: Noon at Peet’s Coffee (B Street and Mission, Downtown Hayward) & 6:30 pm at Hayward Main Library, 835 C St. at Mission Blvd., Hayward, CA 94541 (2 blocks from Hayward BART)
We will be discussing The Writing on My Forehead by Nafisa Haji. Saira Qader is a free-spirited and rebellious Muslim-American of Indo-Pakistani descent who rejects the constricting notions of family, duty, obligation, and fate, choosing instead to become a journalist, the world her home.
Five years later, tragedy strikes, throwing Saira’s life into turmoil. In need of understanding, she looks to the stories of those who came before—her grandparents, a beloved aunt, her mother and father. As Saira discovers the hope, pain, joy, and passion that defined their lives, she begins to face what she never wanted to admit—that choice is not always our own, and that faith is not just an intellectual preference.
Choose from two different meeting times and locations - noon at Peet’s Coffee & Tea or in the evening at the Main Library.
