Monterey, CA — This festival is celebrating the 40th anniversary of six major music events from 1967. The Summer of Love, The Monterey Pop Festival, the release of the Beatles’ Sgt. Peppers album, The Doors ‘Light My Fire’, the 1967 musical “HAIR” and the birth of Pink Floyd. Five of the original acts who performed at the ’67 Monterey Pop Festival will be performing here again in 2007.

San Francisco-based I.E. Artists Group is presenting the “Monterey Summer of Love Festival” this July 28th & 29th from the exact same stage as the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, and has secured five of the original acts who performed in ’67: The Jefferson Starship, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Big Brother and the Holding Company featuring Cathy Richardson of “Love, Janis” fame, and the Grateful Dead’s Tom Constanten. Headlining the event are Riders on the Storm, featuring Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek celebrating the 40th anniversary of The Doors by performing a long list of Doors hits! Also performing from the late 60’s are The Electric Flag, the music of It's A Beautiful Day featuring David LaFlamme and friends and songs from the hit ’67 musical “HAIR” performed by the Stagelight Troop including some of the original cast members!
Performing on either the main or tribute stages are world class tribute bands, Second Flyte as the Byrds, Carlton Poward as Jimi Hendrix, The Sun Kings performing the Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s album with orchestra, the Unauthorized Rolling Stones, The RaveUps as the Yardbirds, San Francisco’s Summer of Love Players as The Mamas and the Papas, The Who and The Animals and just added The Floyd Project tribute to Pink Floyd so all the 40th anniversaries are covered with a live performance!
Festival director Andrew Hernandez is honoring servicemen and baby boomers by allowing them into the general festival for free. “Just show us your military, veterans or AARP card and your in!” Hernandez is also booking contemporary artists to attract Generations X and Y, hoping the kids of the ‘60s and younger generations will connect to discuss today’s world issues and help inspire the surging young activist groups around the World. “The parallels of 1967 and 2007 are surreal,” says Hernandez. “We have got to get today’s youth out from behind their text messaging and Play Stations long enough to create something meaningful and beautiful—we need to get them involved in the struggles of humanity.” Hernandez said the festival will focus mainly on the great music that brought all those groovy kids together and united them in the fight for Peace, Love and Freedom as well as exhibits of ’60s memorabilia, including arts & crafts and appearances of famous poster artists such as Lee Conklin, Cactus Pete and SF Rock Posters among other notables.

yes if it happened again we would go.... hopefully the director and the promoter are going to learn alot from the problems they had...and make them better for the next one??

I agree with the comments above about confused ushers, lack of food variety, and a certain amount of disorganization. I think if the list of performers could be enhanced a little beyond the Summeroflove touring troup to include some contemporary indie pop groups, it could attract some more folks. Probably the big names of the day (CSN, Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel) would have made this too big of an event, but a little more marquee muscle would hurt ticket sales. Needless to say, this was a groovy festival on a sacred site and I still have goosebumbs a week later!!!

well. we are back and we went there... the music was great the DOORS great as always ... the concert was totally unorganized. they let anyone in the arena for both days .which was very bad for those of us that spent $195 and more for the same thing. they was to be security there but they were totally dumb.. we had to really beg for the free goodie bags that were promised to us on line when we purchased our tickets...we got many excuses for that from someone stole all the bags to we ran out of all the goodies before?? when was before??? we were there for the total event from 10am-10pm both days...there was not enough of a varity of food and the special event area for the free food was so easy to get into without special passes that were to be used.others in the box seating were complaining that so many others wer up in the box seats and had totally no tickets for anything.they just walked in the grounds and no said anything. there was no security in the arena for the first day and very little to check it for the second day... the music was good although the copy bands we all the same players??? we never did see the special guest preformers that were advertised on line and in the program..but going and being with old friends that came from all over the area was PRICELESS..
