Ring, ring? The sound of democracy now includes ringing cell phones and beeping text messages. The freedom of speech, the freedom to organize, the right to call for change is taking on a new feel in the wireless age. Mobile messages are spreading across social networks connected by cell phones to mobilize, inform, and activate. Get the message. Connecting with the people is becoming personal and wireless.

What is MobileActive?

Aspiration and Green Media Tooshed are convening MobileActive, a convergence and working session of global activists, communications staff, technology experts, and foundation staff to mine a wide variety of experience, expertise and vision. The invitation-only event will take place in Toronto in September 2005.

What are we hoping to accomplish?

The goal of the MobileActive convergence is to explore the power of the cell phone as an organizing and campaign communication tool with leading activists from all over the world; to share knowledge, stories, and strategies; and accelerate the use of cell phones as a successful tool in campaigns, human rights efforts and field organizing.

What will we discuss?

The MobileActive convergence will develop new guides for campaign planners, communications staff and technology staff that will be widely distributed. Case studies from the field will be explored and a short list of recommendations will be developed for funders interested in supporting campaigns and issue organizing that use mobile phones as an engagement tool. We will be documenting all proceedings on wikis that will be available after the event, together with case studies, guides, and follow-up activities.

Who is coming to MobileActive?

Activists from across the world including Africa, South Korea, the Philippines, India, the Ukraine, and the Americas are invited.
