Biscayne Blvd from 55th Street to NE 77th Street Miami, FL 33137
miami, Florida

Years ago, when you saw someone exposing their bum on Biscayne Boulevard between NE 65th and 75th streets, you were probably in the presence of a certified streetwalker. But these days, the recently designated MiMo (Miami Modern) historic district has classed up its image, and the only butt crack you’ll be privy to is the famous tush of Miami’s Coppertone Girl. The sign, erected in 1958 and subsequently donated to MiMo, was recently outfitted with eco-friendly LED lights. The Coppertone Girl is one of the highlights of a walking tour that will kick off the inaugural MiMo Art Boulevard Festival this Sunday. The fest will feature local artists, plenty of upscale eats, and live music. Because the neighborhood is near many major Art Basel events, organizers were pressured to come through with a legitimate event. Cochair Robert Hernandez says MiMo is up to the challenge. “Real interaction with artwork and artists themselves,” he says, will distinguish the event from other local festivals. He adds that attendees may help create a community mural. Big-name restaurants such as Michy’s and Red Light will have booths, and the event will conclude with a holiday tree-lighting ceremony. The walking tour begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Coppertone Girl (7301 Biscayne Blvd., Miami), and the festival runs from noon to 6 p.m. The main grounds are located at 7500 Biscayne Blvd. The event is free, but $10 donations for the walking tour are encouraged.
