The Better Detroit Youth Movement is organizing The First Annual Detroit 2009 Million Father March, a city-wide campaign that encourages fathers to accompany their child or children to the first day of school. This initiative will be used to increase community, parent and student involvement throughout the school year by working with fathers, mothers, citizens and groups who are committed to better youth education.

Last year, on the first day of the new school year, 400,000 men in 238 cities around the world, including Barcelona, Spain and Devonshire, Bermuda, participated in the Million Father March 2007. This year, 300 cities and an estimated 500,000 men across the world are expected to participate in the Million Father March 2008.

“While The Million Father March is about getting dads in Detroit to drop their kids off to the first day of school,” says BDYM co-founder Harlan Bivens, “we hope this program will lead to higher levels of community, parent and student involvement throughout the school year so that we’ll see more “A’s” on report cards the last day of school.”
