The New York Times describes Mike Daisey as “the master storyteller” and “one of the finest solo performers of his generation.” His monologues weave autobiography, gonzo journalism, and unscripted performance to tell hilarious and heartbreaking stories that make unexpected connections. In The Island at the Birth of the World, directed by Jean-Michele Gregory, Daisey recounts his journey to a South Pacific island whose people worship America at the base of an erupting volcano. Daisey wrestles with the largest questions of what their religion can tell us about our deepest values and the beliefs that lie at the heart of our world. Part adventure story and part memoir, The Island at the Birth of the World explores their culture and ours to unearth a human truth between the seemingly primitive and achingly modern.

The performance includes mature language.

A discussion among Daisey and audience members follows the performance.

Complimentary round-trip shuttle service is provided between the Eisenhower Parking Deck and Schwab Auditorium.

Mike Daisey is presented in partnership with Juniata College’s Halbritter Center for the Performing Arts, where the monologist performs The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, January 26.
