Michigan Peaceworks is sponsoring a protest under the banner of “What is the Price of War?” This rally will take place on March 20, the seventh anniversary of the commencement of U.S. military action in Iraq.

Michigan Peaceworks is focusing on the costs, both human and monetary, of current U.S. wars. This event will take place Saturday, March 20 from 12 pm- 2pm at the corners of East University Ave and South University Ave in Ann Arbor. Concerned and interested community members of all ages and backgrounds are encouraged to join.

In addition to holding placards and signs communicating their feelings about the war, participants will be invited to express their opinion regarding the allocation of current U.S. spending by moving fake $1,000,000 bills from a display marked for defense spending to ones marked healthcare, education, environment, or infrastructure. Local musicians and poets will artistically express their opposition to the war and ongoing occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan.

“We can't afford this war on any level, neither the lives lost and grieved nor the untold millions that could be put to better use for health care and education," says Anne Garcia, chair of the Michigan Peaceworks Antimilitarism Taskforce.

Michigan Peaceworks is a grassroots organization dedicated to peace, democracy, civil rights and civil liberties. The March 20 “What is the price of war?” protest is co-sponsored by the Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice, Veterans for Peace, and the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom.
