Created by Maurice Leblanc in the early twentieth century (and introduced by Michael Sims in this newest Penguin edition), Arsene Lupin, Gentleman Thief details a witty confidence man and burglar — the Sherlock Holmes of crime. In these stories, Leblanc has drawn the portrait of a modern-day prince of thieves.

Michael Sims is the author of Adam’s Navel: A Natural and Cultural History of the Human Form, which was a New York Times Notable Book and a Library Journal Best Science Book, and Darwin’s Orchestra: An Almanac of Nature in History and the Arts. He has written for the Los Angeles Times Book review, New Statesmen and American Archaeology. For Penguin Classics he also edited the Annotated Archy and Mehitabel.
