Michael Feinberg Performing Live!

Michael's pursuance of a higher truth through music has taken him across many soundscapes. Coming from middle eastern and eastern European heritage, traditional folksongs and melodies have been crucial to his concept and development of improvised music along with the jazz tradition and hip hop and rock. Michael is in constant search of a new musical language defined but not limited to these parameters.

Michael's music aspires to challenge the limitations of jazz while returning to its most basic elements - improvisation, creativity, and a fusion of cultures and sounds.

Michael's journey has lead him to study at many great institutions with many renowned teachers including the Berklee School of music where he studied under Jim Stinnett and Hal Crook and the University of Miami where he is pursuing a B.M. and is enrolled with scholarship. At UM he has studied under Chuck Bergeron, Don Coffman, Whit Sidener, and Alex Norris, among others. Michael has also studied classical music extensively under Kevin Mauldin to whom he attributes much of his rich dark sound.

Michel has also had the opportunity to perform with many great musicians at many wonderful venues (Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Atlanta Symphony Hall, Gusman Hall, Churchill Grounds, Berklee Performance Center, Berks Jazz Festival, and the Clifford Brown Jazz Festival) including Slide Hampton, Russell Gunn, Dave Samuels, Ira Sullivan, Ney Rosauro, Ed Calle, Phillip Harper, Shelly Berg, Jim Rotondi, Alex Norris, Ambrose Akinmusire, Sam Barsh, Brian Hogans, and Obed Calvaire among others. Michael does place special emphasis on performing with Russll Gunn who he claims as one of his major influences "Listening to Russell from the audience and on stage exposed me to the beauty that can come from taking the ultimate risk."

Michael released his first cd with his group The Glass Eye Trio in 2007 to much acclaim. As one reviewer stated "as for Feinberg, the principal composer and bandleader, his acumen resembles that of more seasoned musicians and his talent belies his age and experience. His bass walks across the album nimbly, self-assuredly handling disparate moods and modes with aplomb."

One of his compositions from The Glass Eye Trios album "Harajuku" entitled "Sense of Touch" was a semi finalist for both composition and performance in the 2007 international songwriting competition. Michael is also the recipient of a 2008 student downbeat award for his work with the University of Miami's JV1 ensemble. Most recently Michael participated in the 2008 Betty Carter Jazz Ahead residency program at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. which culminated with 4 performances at the Kennedy Center as well as concerts in Wilmington, DE and Reading PA.

Michael is also the founder and creative director for the Miami Creative Music Collective which is aimed at showcasing the many unique and talented young musicians in Miami (see more in the MCM section). His other current projects include: Its Boyfriend Season (Billy Buss, Daniel Platzman, Andrew Toombs, and Daniel Platzman), The Glass Eye Trio (Pascal LeBeouf, Daniel Platzman, Steve Pardo, Rob Hanlon), The Michael Feinberg Quintet (Che Marshall, Louis Hervereaux, Tivon Pennicott, Brian Hogans), and the Michael Feinberg "Large Small Ensemble" (Daniel Platzman, Brian Hogans, Steve Pardo, Zarna Surti, Alex WIntz, Tammy Scheffer, Sam Barsh) which is in the process of recording a new cd due out in winter 08.
