The orchestra has a long history of promoting the talent of Mexico and other Latino composers.

Santa Cecilia Orchestra (SCO) will once again celebrate the glory of México by hosting “México Sinfónico!” that will take place at Thorne Hall at Occidental College, Los Angeles on Sunday May 22 at 4:00 p.m. As the final concert celebration of its 18th season, conductor Sonia Marie De León de Vega will lead SCO’s 80-piece symphony orchestra paying a special tribute to Daniel Catán, Mexico's greatest composer.

The concert performance will feature the music of Daniel Catán as well as Silvestre Revueltas. The four masterworks will include Daniel Catán’s Caribbean Airs, Overture from "El Vuelo del Aguila", Intermezzo for Oboe d'amore and Orchestra from “Il Postino”, and Silvestre Revuelta’s Noche de los Maya and will include 14 percussionists.

La Noche de los Mayas hurls itself at an audience like a Mexican Rite of Spring. The artists will dazzle the audience with their virtuosity as the perform extravagant sonorities, paint panoramic scenes and driving rhythms abound in this magnificent work.

SCO continues to fulfill its Music is For Everyone mission during the 2010-2011 season by offering full orchestra concerts, chamber concerts and its nationally acclaimed Discovering Music Program.

There will be one performance only of this program. Tickets priced at $26, $20 and $7 (youth, 17 and under) are available by calling the orchestra office at (323) 259-3011 or by visiting http://scorchestra.org/201011orderform.html#May2011

SCO kicked off the 2010-2011 season on October 15, 2010 with a concert and fundraiser, which featured a string orchestra performing music by Respighi and selections from Vivaldi and Piazzolla with violin soloist Mark Menzies. The season included five concerts that paid tribute to the company's history as the only orchestra in the nation with a specific mission to take classical music to the Latino community.
