Metropolis - Film (1927). Fritz Lang Retrospective. In collaboration with Enlighten Film Society. Metropolis is an epic projection of a futuristic city, divided into the working class and the elite, which seems almost plausible today. In the 21st century, a dehumanised proletariat labours non-stop in a miserable subterranean expanse while, above, it's a state-of-the-art city, controlled by a sinister authoritarian. His son, Freder, rebels. The labourers repose faith in Maria, a young woman who wills her comrades to be patient. A mad scientist kidnaps her, Freder races to save her and curb the damage done by her robot-replacement. Metropolis is plunged into a class clash. This screening will be inaugurated by noted cinematographer A. K. Bir. A recipient of six National Awards for Best Film (such as, Adi Mimansa and Hamari Beti), Bir has also won the National Award for Best Cinematography thrice. A graduate of FTII in the '60s, his feature film, Lavanya Preeti, received the Best Asian Film Award at the Osaka Film Festival and was invited to the Berlin Film Festival in the Competition section. He has also chaired the National Awards jury and been a jury member at the Berlin Film Festival.
