Metal Sculpture - Introduction to Metal Art January 12, 2010

Gavin LupinskiThis introductory class is designed for the student with little to no experience in working with metal or shop tools. Students will learn basic tool operation and the fundamental metal working techniques (cold and hot) of cutting, manipulating, and joining, and apply them to three assigned projects: a riveted geometric box, a brazed organic tree sculpture, and a welded tabletop candleholder. Projects will range from 2-4 weeks in length. The final project will be independent and of your choice. Students will come away with a sound idea of what can be done with metal to create art, have 3-4 completed projects, and be fully prepared for the next level class. Please note: This introductory class is open only to first time EAC Metal Sculpture students, or with Department Coordinator approval.Safety is of the utmost concern in the EAC Metal Sculpture Department. Safe practices include common sense, awareness of yourself and others working around you, and appropriate personal protective equipment.Students should come dressed in natural fiber cotton or wool work clothes and sturdy, closed toed shoes. The EAC provides canvas welding jackets / aprons and appropriate eye protection for use in the studio. A more detailed discussion of safety requirements will be discussed during Week 1 class.
