Mixed media artwork by 27 accomplished artists will be showcased as part of the Mendocino Art Center's Artists in Residence exhibit, "9 Months," April 3 through May 3, in the Main and Nichols galleries. The eagerly anticipated annual showing features a wide spectrum of new works developed by the artists during their residencies at the Art Center since September. Included will be fine arts, jewelry/metalsmithing, ceramics, sculpture, textiles and photography.

The resident artists come to Mendocino, bringing with them a variety of perspectives from diverse backgrounds. The residency program provides the time for the individual artist to investigate ideas and develop new work. The interaction between the residents provides a forum in which artistic techniques and ideas are shared and exchanged. One- to nine-month residencies are available for the working artists and craftsperson, emerging or established, in ceramics, digital arts, fine art, jewelry, sculpture and textiles. The residency application process is competitive and artists are evaluated and selected on the strength of the application and work samples.

This year the Mendocino Art Center has hosted artists from across the country, including Alaska, California, Colorado, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, New Jersey, Ohio, Tennessee and Utah.

Joy Verner, "Story of the Bench"

In the Abramson Gallery, Joy Verner's "Story of the Bench," features her wonderful plaques and paintings preserving the history and spirit of the former giant driftwood bench from the Mendocino headlands that overlooked Portuguese beach. Around 1992, Verner was inspired to take clay and rubber mallet to the bench and make imprints of the weathered carvings that she later made into wall pieces.

Julie A. Higgins Exhibit

Julie A. Higgins exhibits recent pastels, paintings and prints in Gallery Ten. Higgins' work is inspired by the sensual environments where she has lived. Her paintings are rich, vibrant, and boldy colorful, symbolic images of fertile landscapes and voluptuous women.
