More about Erno:
A native Philadelphian, Erno moved to San Francisco in the '70s. He apprenticed with Lyle Tuttle and eventually opened his own shop in the Lower Haight and, later, a sister shop in Santa Cruz.

Sadly, in the late '90s, Erno's heroin addiction took over his life, resulting in the loss of his shops and most of his belongings. In 2001 he was hospitalized for an emergency amputation of his right arm. In a coma and at death's door, Erno fought his way back, eventually learning to tattoo with his left hand. He thoroughly enjoyed his new lease on life and is greatly missed by his family and friends.

With Erno's death, San Francisco has lost a great artist, teacher, and storyteller, but his legend lives on in the multitude of tattoos he has done, the many tattoo artists he brought into the business, and all the people whose lives he touched.
