Filipino-American writer Tess Uriza Holthe, born and raised in San Francisco, is best known for her national bestselling novel When the Elephants Dance, which shares similar themes with this month's NEA Big Read selection, Bless Me, Ultima. Crowned the #1 bestseller by the San Francisco Chronicle and a 2009 selection of Hayward Public Library's Mostly Literary Fiction Book Group, When the Elephants Dance explores the retelling of supernatural tales based on indigenous Filipino mythology and Spanish-influenced novels, told from the perspective of a family hiding in a cellar during the last weeks of the Japanese occupation in the Philippines during World War II.
