Everyones Reading Arc of Justice January 15 - April 20, 2007
Arc of Justice: A Saga of Race, Civil Rights, and Murder in the Jazz Age by Kevin Boyle is this years selection for the sixth annual Metro Detroit area reading program Everyones Reading. This powerful book tells the story of Ossian Sweet, a doctor and the grandson of a slave, who moved his family to a bungalow in an all white working-class Detroit neighborhood. A mob hurled rocks and wrath at Sweets home in an effort to drive the Sweet family away. As Sweet and supporters defended the house, shots were fired and a white man was killed. Clarence Darrow, the legendary labor lawyer and Scopes Monkey Trial defender, agreed to take the Sweet case. Arc of Justice recounts the trial, explores the politics of racism, the growing pains of a young Civil Rights movement, and poignantly captures an epic tale of a man trapped by the battles of his eras changing times.

Winner of the 2004 National Book Award, the Simon Wiesenthal Centers Tolerance Book Award, finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, New York Times Notable Book, and a State of Michigan Notable Book, this story and its aftermath is one every resident of Michigan should know.
