The Mediaeval Period in Spain extends over more than 1000 years from 409 to 1492. In the first 3 centuries of this period, known as the Dark Ages, Spain was ruled by the Visigoths until they were defeated during the Moorish invasions in 711. The Christian kingdoms of the North of the Iberian Peninsula (Leon, Castile, Aragon and Navarre) gradually extended their authority, building small churches in the Romanesque Style and decorating them with frescoes. Their interaction with the Muslim cultures of the south in the 11th Century, particularly the conquest of Toledo, produced a dynamic inquisitive culture which contributed greatly to the Renaissance. A new architectural style arose in the 12th Century, known as the Gothic, resulting in the creation of magnificent cathedrals and royal buildings. The conquest of Granada in 1492, last outpost of Muslim rule on the Peninsula, ushered in a new era. Details of this event may be subject to change.
