Faculty and students from the University of Memphis will join Memphis City Beautiful in the fourth of a series of clean ups along the shoreline of McKellar Lake at President’s Island. Volunteers will pick up litter and debris that has accumulated in McKellar Lake near Jack Carley Causeway. Much of the trash is recyclable human litter – plastic bottles, glass, etc. – that was tossed out on the streets and swept into the storm drains eventually spilling into McKellar Lake.
All recyclable materials will be sorted, bagged and transported by University of Memphis trucks to International Paper to be recycled. During the first clean up 40+ volunteers collected 1,240 pounds of plastic/Styrofoam and 1,000 pounds of metal/glass that were recycled. The seond clean up had over 110 volunteers participating - weight of the recyclables has not been dteremined for this clean up to date.
Bags, gloves, tools and will be provided for the volunteers.
