British triphop pioneers Massive Attack will play at an outdoor event at the Westerpark in Amsterdam on Thursday 3rd July. It will be the outfit's first gig in the Netherlands in two years and is part of a string of Live At Westerpark events which will also see separate performance by the likes of R.E.M, Radiohead, Mika and Leonard Cohen.
Tickets will be made available this Saturday (15th March) although Live Nation members were offered the opportunity to purchase tickets as of yesterday.
Massive Attack were founded in 1987 in Bristol, UK by Daddy G, Robert '3D' del Naja and Grantley Marshall after a fusion of various local sound-systems. With the release of their 1991 debut album Blue Lines, the band were critically acclaimed for merging acid jazz, hiphop, electronica and soul into a new genre labeled triphop. The outfit continued their success with the release of international lauded albums Mezzanine and Protection. Their 1991 single Unfinished Sympathy, featuring Shara Nelson on vocals, has been consistently listed as one of the top ten songs of all times in British media polls. Last year saw Massive Attack working on various movie soundtracks, DVDs and a special recording session at the infamous Abbey Road Studios. A new studio album has been slated for release in June this year.
