Mark Thompson’s exhibition, All that Glisters… is showing at the Robin Gibson Gallery from Saturday, 2 April to Sunday, 27 April.

The subject matter is drawn from contemporary social and political events and whimsy. Often, unassociated objects are juxtaposed with the familiar to create visual clues and metaphors that are read within the context of the viewers own understanding. Items such as traditional Peking Opera head dresses and other Asian influenced items are recurring themes associated with an appreciation of other cultures of the region.

Many of the paintings are painted on gesso on wooden panels with gold coloured metal leaf. This is a conscious effort to remind the viewer of older techniques usually associated with religious paintings of saints and angels. This technique is still practiced in the preparation of Russian and Greek icons.
