Early jazz great Jelly Roll Morton said that a "Spanish tinge" was necessary in jazz, referring to the voluminous traffic between Havana and New Orleans around the turn of the 20th Century. Mark Levine & The Latin Tinge draws rhythmic inspiration from both Afro-Cuban music and jazz in what Latin Beat calls "the preeminent jazz quartet found north of Havana."
