John Kretschmer will present "At the Mercy of the Sea" on March 24 at 2:00 p.m.

"At the Mercy of the Sea" traces the lives of three sailors, including Kretschmer's friend Carl Wake, who were swept up in the open ocean by a monster hurricane that confounded all predictions, traveling east instead of west through the Caribbean. Kretschmer retraces these sailors' journeys through life and across oceans to find meaning in the improbable intersection of three lives lost in this terrible storm.

" 'At the Mercy of the Sea' kept me plunging ahead to the tragic end and left me feeling humbled and lucky to be alive," says Jim Carrier, transatlantic sailor and author of "The Ship and the Storm: Hurricane Mitch and the Loss of the Fantome." "I felt I knew Carl Wake, because John Kretschmer found in him an archetype,an aging sailor with an age-old dream."

Kretschmer, a professional sailor, has logged more than 200,000 offshore sailing miles. He is the author of six books including his memoir "Flirting With Mermaids" and the "Used Boat Notebook." He is a contributing editor to "Sailing Magazine" and the Kretschmer for "The Miami Herald."
