AMERICAN SUBLIME opens in the resonant, visually sumptuous, Moorish-style chapel at Congregation Rodeph Sholom. (Secular in outlook, Feldman nonetheless remarked that he wanted to be “the first great composer who is Jewish.”) Feldman’s 94-minute Triadic Memories (1981) is performed by pianist Marilyn Nonken, who has earned praise for her recording on Mode Records. Feldman described this work, possessed of a stately unease, as “a conscious attempt at ‘formalizing’ a disorientation of memory.”
