Marcus Shelby has been playing the acoustic bass for 23 years. In this time, he has built a diverse and accomplished biography. Shelby was bandleader of Columbia Records and GRP Impulse! Recording Artists Black/Note and is currently the Artistic Director and leader of The Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra, The Marcus Shelby Septet and the Marcus Shelby Trio. In addition, Shelby holds an instructor position at the Berkeley Young Musician Program, San Francisco State University and the Stanford Jazz Workshop and is the 2006 Fellow in the Resident Dialogues Program of the Committee for Black Performing Arts at Stanford University. As the 1991 winner of the Charles Mingus Scholarship, Shelby’s studies include work under the tutelage of composer James Newton and legendary bassist Charlie Haden. Recent honors include the City Flight Magazine 2005 award as one of the “Top Ten Most Influential African Americans in the Bay Area”.

Jazz Mondays on Main is a new music series this year, building on the success of previous years of Downtown WOW events. In 2009, Main Street will be hosting Jazz concerts every Monday evening from June 22nd through August 10th featuring the Bay Area's best jazz artists. From 6-8pm, enjoy the music, eat at one of the many great restaurants along Main Street, and if the mood suits you, DANCE! An all-star lineup will be sure to make for many wonderful Monday evenings on Main Street in Downtown Redwood City’s Historic District.

Along with Jazz on Main, other exciting FREE evening events include: Dancing on the Square on Tuesdays, Movies on the Square on Thursdays, and Music on the Square on Fridays. Other ongoing events in the coming months include six special outdoor exhibits featuring Art on the Square, Monday and Wednesday afternoon performances with Lunchtime on the Square, Sunday Swing Dancing with Lindy on the Square, as well as weekend Shakespeare performances, Sunday Target Family Days, and Cultural Events.
