For years the March of Dimes (MOD) has been boycotted by pro-life groups for its involvement in the abortion industry. Unfortunately, many well-meaning pro-life citizens continue to support MOD, not knowing one of the group's methods of preventing what it calls "birth defects" is to promote abortion.
MOD was one of the major forces behind the development and widespread use of amniocentesis in the second trimester of pregnancy. Amniocentesis is a test commonly used to determine if a preborn child has an incurable congenital abnormality, which often facilitates the decision to abort "defective" children.

NEW YORK, March 14, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - As if the March of Dimes (MOD) support of eugenics and abortions in cases of fetal abnormality were not enough, pro-lifers now have an additional reason not to give money to the MOD. The Eliott Institute has pointed out that MOD has refused to admit that abortion is a major risk factor in low-birth weight of subsequent babies. In announcing a major fund-raising effort, MOD claims a 27 percent rise in premature births "is a mystery." Yet, points out the Eliott Institute's Dr. David Reardon, the organization should know that at least 48 published studies have shown a history of abortion places women at significantly higher risk of premature birth and low-birth-weight. "March of Dimes is exploiting the "mysterious" rise in dangerous pre-term deliveries to raise hundreds of millions of dollars while concealing one of the primary causes of premature birth -- a prior history of abortion," says Reardon in a release. He encourages the signing of a petition asking the MOD to admit the abortion link.
