Marc Michael Epstein—Vassar professor, historian of Jewish visual culture, and former director of the Hebrew Books and Manuscripts division of Sotheby’s Judaica department—discusses several magnificent and enigmatic illuminated haggadot created for Jews in the high Middle Ages as detailed in his new book, The Medieval Haggadah. Epstein examines these works with fresh eyes, offering insight into the meaning of these beautifully rendered works and addressing broader issues of Jewish thought, culture, and identity.
