The Mendocino Art Center will feature a special exhibit focusing on the biblical works of Marc Chagall, a 20th century multi-cultural and multi-media artist, in "Marc Chagall: Biblical Dreamer," November 8 to November 22, in the Main Gallery. There is a $10 suggested donation to view the exhibit.

The Chagall exhibit includes scenes from both the Old Testament and New Testament. He was quoted as saying, "I did not see the Bible, I dreamed it." One of his most famous works is the series of stained glass windows which he created, along with Charles Marq, for the chapel at the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem. The subject matter of the windows is the Twelve Tribes of Israel as described by Jacob in Genesis and Moses in Deuteronomy. Lithographs of the windows and works from the book of Exodus will be on display.

Chagall was born an Orthodox Jew in Russia in 1885 and took up art in his late teens. He later moved to Paris, where he became part of an art community that included many notable artists. While not practicing Judaism, he used many biblical themes in his art. He took Jesus as the symbol of the Jewish people tormented by the world. He spent some time in America during the Nazi occupation of Paris, but returned to France during WWII and eventually settled in Saint-Paul-de-Vence in southern France, where he was buried in 1985.
