Armed Forces Day (weekend) Marazion 2011.

2011 will be the second year for our event in the picturesque market town of Marazion. The event venue is 100mts from the golden sand beaches of Mounts bay and the fairytale castle of St Michael’s Mount.

We are the South West Battle Group and Living History, a group who re-enact history from WW1 to the present day. Not just military and war aspect, we also cover the civil home front.
The event, as directed by MOD, is that the AFD event is away of saying thank you to the men and women of our armed forces past and present. We did indeed start off last year with this very much to the forefront. However it was not long before we were receiving requests from service personnel, asking if they could join in with us. The Air Dispatch Squadron at RAF Lynham sent their TA section down for the weekend with huge displays. A locally owned Spitfire had its wings removed and transported to our venue and the wings re attached. Our own group laid on displays of weapons, ww2 medical station, a very large tented field kitchen which we own formed our NAAFI serving refreshments and meals. And a whole lot of vintage Military Vehicles through the years. For the veterans and indeed everyone the Weekend kicked of with a parade through Marazion lead by the Devon and Cornwall Police Pipe band. Drumhead service in the field lead by the Anglican church and chapel from Marazion with the two congregations. 1940’s entertainment and dances. Live battle re-enacting. Fly past by 771 Sqdn Royal Navy.

This year, 2011, will see the event grow substantially. Tri-service recruiting will be present with displays for the visitors to engage in. A 40ft x 20ft Marquee will be used as our hospitality centre with Refreshments, Bar, Stage and dance floor. Saturday evening will be a 1940’s dance with live entertainers with an ENSA theme. Many re-enactors will be attending from out of County. Full battle re-enactments during the afternoon with blank firing and pyrotechnics and explosives. Camping facilities available on site. For fuller information we will shortly open a Marazion 2011 section on our website www.southwestbattlegroup.org.uk or contact the Secretary on 01208 831989 or the Chairman on 01736 365336.
