OpenStreetMap is a free, open source map of the planet that can be editied by anyone. It could be considered a wikipedia of maps. Through major imports of government data, and through edits by people like you, it is a very capable map already but with further contribution will surpass any commercial maps you currently use.
Furthermore, custom 'renderers' of the data can be written to produce maps oriented toward particular uses, such as cyclists, hikers, or pedestrians. See http://www.opencyclemap.org for an example.
At the mapping party you will learn how to use a GPS and the JOSM software to edit the map. After a little introduction you can go out on the streets with your own GPS or with a loaner from us, walk or ride your bike around and gather data. Then bring it back to the mapping party and we will edit and upload the map changes you've made.
* Learn to edit the map using JOSM
* Learn how to use a GPS (loaners available) to gather map data
* bring any GPS traces you already have, on a SD card, CD or on your laptop
* bring your questions about OSM
