Mandela - Play (1996). Directed by Angus Bibson and Jo Menell. Cast: Nelson Mandela and Winnie Mandela. A chronicle of the life of South African leader Nelson Mandela -- best known for his 27 years of imprisonment and bringing an end to apartheid -- this film sheds light on the little known, early period of Mandela's life, his childhood, adolescence, career in law and first marriage. We learn about Mandela's winning personality during those hard times and how it served to create a man capable of liberating his country from racial oppression. This is an interesting, if glossy biography, with great music and some candid words from Mandela on circumcision rites and how his marriages came apart due to political pursuits. A little too feel-good as a film that shows how a strong ego, tempered by gentility, can save a stressed-out country.
