Children and their parents are invited for a midwinter getaway at Matthaei Botanical Gardens during the school spring-break days. Drop in during the break and take a self-guided scavenger hunt to search for fairies, trolls, and other fantastical creatures that will be hidden in the conservatory Feb. 20–28. Scheduled events on the following dates:

Tues., Feb. 23: Little Bitta’ Spring: Decorate pots and plant them with spring bulbs and/or indoor plants to take home. Participants may bring their favorite dish or pot (6 inches wide or deep) or use one provided by Matthaei.
Wed., Feb. 24: Bathtub Bouquets: Learn about the healing power of plants with special herbal bath potions that children can mix on their own and take home.
Thurs., Feb. 25: Tropical Topics: Take a guided tour through the tropical house in the conservatory and learn about some of the special plants—such as chocolate, vanilla, ginger, and pepper—that grow in warm climates.

Fri., Feb. 26: Fairy and Troll Gardens: Kids will build their own special fairy dish gardens and create miniature fairy and troll homes.

Preregistration requested for scheduled activities; drop-ins welcome. $5.00 fee per child includes admission to conservatory and activities and materials described above. Conservatory hours: Tues. & Thurs.-Sun., 10 am-4:30 pm; Wednesdays, 10 am-8 pm; Free admission Wednesdays noon-8 pm; closed Mondays. 734-647-7600.
