Every emotion known to man was wrung out of Mahler’s soul in the composition of his fifth symphony, with its famous adagietto - said to be ‘the best known, but least understood’ of Mahler’s works’. It’s a phenomenal symphony which explores the struggle between light and dark. Considering this vast musical canvas, conductor Herbert von Karajan said “you forget that time has passed. A great performance of the fifth is a transforming experience.”

Also on the programme, Chandos Young Musician winner Lydia Griffiths performs the Richard Strauss oboe concerto.
