This course considers the culture of the Renaissance court, with its wealth, careful rules of etiquette, ambiguous career opportunities for the artist, and frequent military campaigns. We examine the work of masters such as Leonardo da Vinci in Milan, of Piero della Francesca in Urbino and Rimini, and of Michelangelo in Rome. We draw a connection between the strong personalities of courtly patrons not exclusively male, as the fascinating case of Isabella dEste proves and the innovative art produced by their favoured artists.
