Short Film Event & Networking Evening

Short films can be a great calling card for filmmakers and a vital springboard to developing careers and making features. But with thousands of films out there, how do you stand out from the crowd and ensure you make the biggest impact possible to capitalise on your short’s potential to further your film career?

Screen South and Lighthouse present a vital opportunity for emerging filmmakers to learn about marketing, selling and exhibiting their shorts and to gain from the knowledge and experience of industry professionals. Topics up for discussion include getting shorts in front of audiences, maximising a film's festival life, online distribution strategies, the real deal on short film sales and using your short as a stepping stone towards your next project.

We are delighted to welcome director Nick Whitfield, who last year won great acclaim and the Michael Powell Award for Best New British Feature Film at Edinburgh Film Festival. SKELETONS, Nick’s debut feature, was developed from a self-financed short which caught the eye of regional funders and enabled Nick to move from shorts to features in just three years.

James Rocarols is the Content Producer at BBC Film Network, the BBC’s online showcase for short films and British filmmaking. Responsible for selecting films for inclusion on the website and attending festivals to spot and meet with emerging UK film talent, James will be giving the low down on short film distributors, online opportunities, commercial avenues and targeting people of influence.

As Head of Film at Lighthouse, Emily Kyriakides recently commissioned and executive produced four short films in partnership with BBC Film Network. All have been doing very well on the international film festival circuit, with WISH 143 earning an Oscar nomination and TURNING receiving a Best Short Film BAFTA nomination.

Places are limited and attendees must register in order to reserve a place. Preference will be given to those who have made at least one short as this event is not about the production of shorts.
