Puccini's tragic tale unfolds in Nagasaki, Japan in the early 1940s. U.S. naval officer Pinkerton "marries" a Japanese geisha (Butterfly) in a fake wedding ceremony which he takes lightly but she does not. Pinkerton abandons his child bride, who waits faithfully, trusting he will one day return to her. Butterfly must make a terrible decision: will she choose a life of disgrace or death with honor?
