Macy Gray's hit single, 'I Try,' introduced listeners to a different kind of female voice -- carefree, deep and somewhat raspy but beautiful nonetheless. Her sophomore effort, 'The Id,' is an edgy follow up to her debut CD, 'On How Life Is.' Emerging from London's Acid Jazz scene in the late eighties, Brand New Heavies debut on record came in 1991; mixing soulful instrumentals and funk driven rhythms into a sonic brew, topped with vocalist N'Dia Davenport's contributions.
